Daisey Cutter: The Ultimate Apple Fanboy, Mike Daisey, Is Back With A Slightly More Realistic Show

Screen Shot 2012-07-30 at 11.21.15 AMMike Daisey, noted fabulist, is back at his original theatre in DC, The Woolly Mammoth where he is holding encore presentations of his debunked - and now slightly rewritten - show about working conditions at Foxconn. Gone are the guards with guns, the fake crippled man who touched the totemic iPad, and the real/fake translator named Cathy. Daisey replaced those stock characters with a bit of self deprecating humor and, as far as I can tell, a few, clearer facts.

Romney praises health care in Israel, where research says 'strong ...

(Hoyasmeg | Flickr)

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney had some very kind things to say about the Israeli health care system at a fundraiser there Monday. He praised Israel for spending just 8 percent of its GDP on health care and still remaining a ?pretty healthy nation:?

?When our health care costs are completely out of control. Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the GDP in Israel? 8 percent. You spend 8 percent of GDP on health care. And you?re a pretty healthy nation. We spend 18 percent of our GDP on health care. 10 percentage points more. That gap, that 10 percent cost, let me compare that with the size of our military. Our military budget is 4 percent. Our gap with Israel is 10 points of GDP. We have to find ways, not just to provide health care to more people, but to find ways to finally manage our health care costs.

Romney?s point about Israel?s success in controlling health care costs is spot on: Its health care system has seen health care costs grow much slower than other industrialized nations.

How it has gotten there, however, may not be to the Republican candidate?s liking: Israel regulates its health care system aggressively, requiring all residents to carry insurance and capping revenue for various parts of the country?s health care system.

Israel created a national health care system in 1995, largely funded through payroll and general tax revenue. The government provides all citizens with health insurance: They get to pick from one of four competing, nonprofit plans. Those insurance plans have to accept all customers?including people with pre-existing conditions?and provide residents with a broad set of government-mandated benefits.

Health insurance does not, however, cover every medical service. Dental and vision care, for example, fall outside of the standard government set of benefits. The majority of Israelis?81 percent ?purchase a supplemental health insurance plan to ?use the private health care system for services that may not be available in through the public system,? according to a paper by Health Affairs.

Now, let?s get to the costs. As you can see in the chart below, Israel?s health care costs have hovered around 8 percent of its gross domestic product for over two decades, while other countries? have seen theirs rise:

?

Israel?s lower health care spending does not look to sacrifice the quality of care. It has made more improvements than the United States on numerous quality metrics, and the country continues to have a higher life expectancy:

Source: New England Journal of Medicine

How?d they do it? Jack Zwanziger and Shuli Brammli-Greenberg took a crack at that question in a 2011 Health Affairs paper. The answer, they say, has a lot to do with ?strong government influence:

The national government exerts direct operational control over a large proportion of total health care expenditures, through a range of mechanisms, including caps on hospital revenue and national contracts with?salaried?physicians. The Ministry of Finance has been able to persuade the national government to agree to relatively small increases in the health care budget because the system has performed well, with a very high level of public satisfaction.

The Israeli Ministry of Finance controls about 40 percent of Israel?s health care expenditures through those payments to the four insurance plans. The? ministry decides how much it will pay the health plans for each Israeli citizen they enroll, making adjustments for how old a person is and how high their health care costs are expected to be.

It?s then up to the health insurance plan to figure out how to provide coverage within that set budget. If they spend too much?have a patient who is constantly in the hospital, for example?they will find themselves in the red. It?s that set budget?a capitated budget, in health policy terms?that seems to be crucial to the Israeli health care system?s success in cost control.

During a presentation at Black Hat, Trustwave's Nicholas Percoco and Sean Schulte explained that they had created ?SMS Blocker,? which appeared to be like any other SMS blocker app on the market, but was also capable of harvest information such as contacts, SMS messages, photos; launching DoS attacks; and even force a web page to load. And yet, Bouncer repeatedly failed to flag it as malicious.

Brain response to emotion altered in BD youth | Mental Health Hub

    By Mark Cowen

Results from a US study show that adolescents with bipolar disorder (BD) have altered activation in certain brain regions in response to facial expressions of emotion.

Furthermore, the researchers found that adolescents with the mood disorder exhibited problems processing and/or disengaging attention from facial expressions of emotion compared with their mentally healthy peers.

The findings come from a study of 20 euthymic adolescents with BD who were aged 9-17 years and had a family history of the mood disorder and 21 mentally healthy adolescents without such a family history. There were no significant between-group differences regarding mean age, gender distribution, or IQ.

All of the participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain while viewing happy, sad, or neutral facial expressions.

Overall, there were no significant differences between adolescents with BD and controls regarding task performance, although BD patients showed a trend for reduced accuracy when identifying the gender of the happy and sad faces.

However, adolescents with BD exhibited significantly reduced activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and significantly increased amygdala/hippocampal activation while viewing facial expressions of emotion compared with controls.

Furthermore, adolescents with BD showed increasing levels of activation in the superior temporal sulcus/insula and visual cortex between the early and late phases of exposure to each block of facial expressions.

By contrast, activation in these areas fell slightly among controls between the early and late phases of exposure.

This suggests that mentally healthy individuals efficiently process emotional faces and then decrease allocation of neural resources, whereas BD patients have a gradually increasing response to faces, ?possibly reflecting difficulty processing emotional facial expressions,? comment Amy Garrett (Stanford University School of Medicine, California) and team.

They conclude in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: ?Our findings support models of deficient prefrontal and excessive amygdala activation in patients with BD compared with healthy controls, and add new information suggesting that youth with BD have aberrant timing of superior temporal sulcus and visual cortical activation to facial expressions.?

Exploding termites: Aging termites become suicide bombers, finds study (+video)

As it ages, a species of tropical termite develops a 'backpack' filled with toxic chemicals that explodes when the insect is threatened. ?

    By Wynne Parry,?LiveScience Senior Writer / July 26, 2012

The picture shows a soldier, two white workers and two blue workers of the termite species Neocapritermes taracua. The two bluish spots high on the back of the abdomen of the two blue workers contain crystals, a crucial part of their suicide weaponry.

When grabbed by another termite, a predator or a person with tweezers, these backpack-sporting termites, which the researchers call blue workers, rupture and spew a toxic, sticky substance, scientists have found.

The unfortunate workers?from this species of tropical termite,?Neocapritermes taracua,?have two bluish spots visible on the backs of their abdomens. These spots contain crystals made of a copper-containing protein stored in two external "backpack" pouches, write the researchers.

The crystals react with the salivary gland secretions stored in their abdomens to create a droplet of toxic goo that can kill or paralyze worker termites from another species,?Labiotermes labralis, an experiment revealed. [Video of Exploding Suicide Termites]

So-called white workers also have the salivary secretions but lack the blue crystals. These workers are less aggressive, slower to burst in battle and the substance they produce is not as effective?against their enemies.

The researchers transplanted the crystals from blue workers onto white workers, and found the white workers became more deadly once they had the crystals.??

They also determined that the blue workers were older by measuring the length of the edge of the termites' mandibles. Termites chew on wood and as they age their mandibles wear down. The larger the blue crystals on a termite, the more blunt its mandibles, the researchers found.

Among?social insects?like termites, the practice of sending older workers into battle is common, researcher Yves Roisin of Universit? Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium said in a podcast interview released by the journal Science, where this research is detailed.

"[Among] such insects of course the individual doesn't really count or it counts by the work it can actually do for the colony, and when they are old and probably less efficient they are more likely to sacrifice themselves," Roisin said.

However, the blue workers' suicide gear is highly unusual in the world of?insect warfare, because the combination of blue crystals and salivary secretions make it a two-component system, Roisin said, adding that it is also exceptional that one component (the crystals) is carried outside of the body.

So far, the researchers have seen this behavior in this species only, but they hope to see if its relatives do something similar, he said.

The research appears in Friday's (July 27) issue of the journal Science.

leland - Why Choose Direct Mail With Your Marketing Dollars? | Tri ...

Direct mail has been a popular part of the marketing mix for decades.?? Why?? When executed correctly, direct mail pieces can yield a much higher response rate than other forms of marketing.?? Direct mail isn?t just limited to letters or postcards.?? For example, membership cards, brochures and promotional items can also be mailed.
If you are considering direct mail in your business, here are 4 reasons that direct mail should be a part of your marketing strategy.

    1)?Targeted Audience
Use your own mailing list or purchase one of ours ? sending mail to a specific audience will get you the results you desire.?? Lists can be explicit by not only geographical data, but also by options such as gender, ethnicity, income and buying interests.?? Increase response rates and improve ROI by using direct mail to target only those prospects that you want to do business with or who have already indicated an interest in your service or product.

    2)?Personalization
Use personalization to speak directly to an individual, not to an entire mailing list. With digital printing, each mailing can be unique to the recipient.? These personalized messages can include references to past purchases, certain product or service preferences, personal interests, and even personalized promotional offers.? This kind of relevance drives increased response rates.

    3)?Brand Awareness
Direct mail can be used to effectively build brands.? Utilizing a series of mail pieces with your logo and?colors will put your business? messages right into the homes of your audience.

    4)?Measurable results
By coding your mailings, you can track results easily.? Tracking methods include, but are not limited to:? offer numbers, coupons, bar codes, phone numbers and even personal URLs.? Tracking can capture those that display an interest in your product, first time purchasers and subsequent orders.

Liberty Ross on Marriage to Rupert Sanders: Difficult, Lonely

Somewhat lost amidst the shock and sadness of Kristen Stewart cheating on Robert Pattinson is the other side of this dishonest coin:

Rupert Sanders, with whom Stewart made out on at least one occasion, is a married man with two children.

And in an ironic bit of timing, his wife - 33-year old model Liberty Ross - opened up to YOU Magazine just two weeks ago about her marriage to the director. It's not excuse whatsoever, but there clearly have been problems at home.

    Liberty Ross and Rupert Sanders

"I romanticized domesticity for a while, and loved having a shopping list of groceries stuck to the fridge for the first time," Ross told the publication. "But moving here and starting a life all over again was a lot harder than I had anticipated. I just didn’t think it would be as isolating and daunting as it turned out to be."

With Sanders off filming Snow White and the Huntsman, Ross admits she got very lonely.

"I would never say out loud that I am raising my children alone, but a lot of the time it has felt like that."

Ross also lamented how she went from working in the modeling industry with stalwarts such as Karl Lagerfeld and John Galliano… to "living on an isolated hilltop with my husband gone most of the time." However, she ended the interview on a positive note:

"That's why everything feels so amazing now. We rode through the really hard times and we stuck it out."

    Yeah. About that...

Sanders issued his own apology yesterday after news of his dalliance with Stewart broke. He said:

"My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart. I am praying that we can get through this together."

Teen Doing Well 2 Years After Stem Cell Windpipe Transplant

WEDNESDAY, July 25 (HealthDay News) -- Two years after he became the first child to receive a stem cell-supported trachea (windpipe) transplant, a 13-year-old boy is able to breathe normally, has grown about four inches taller, does not require any anti-rejection drugs and has returned to school.

Ciaran Finn-Lynch, born with a structural defect of his large airway, underwent the transplant in March 2010 at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. After his windpipe was removed, it was replaced by a windpipe from a deceased donor in Italy.

The windpipe was stripped of the donor's cells down to the inert structure of collagen. Tissue from the lining of Finn-Lynch's windpipe was implanted in the new windpipe to kick-start the growth of a lining in the new windpipe.

The surgeons laced the transplanted windpipe with Finn-Lynch's own bone marrow stem cells to prevent his body from rejecting the new organ. The teen also received compounds to promote the growth and differentiation of cells within the new windpipe.

It was the first attempt to grow stem cells within the body of a child who had this type of operation, rather than in a laboratory, according to an article published online July 25 in The Lancet.

"Since the treatment plan for Ciaran was devised in an emergency, we used a novel mix of techniques that have proved successful in treating other conditions," paper co-author Martin Birchall, a professor of laryngology at University College London's Ear Institute, said in a journal news release. "To minimize delays, we bypassed the usual process of growing cells in the laboratory over a period of weeks, and instead opted to grow the cells inside the body, in a similar manner to treatments currently being (tested) with patients who have had heart attacks."

He added that more research is needed on stem cells grown deliberately inside the body, rather than grown first in a laboratory over a long time. "This research should help to convert one-off successes such as this into more widely available clinical treatments for thousands of children with severe tracheal problems worldwide," he said.

Solis, File)

(AP) ? People are inventing so many new ways to get high that lawmakers can't seem to keep up.

Over the past two years, the U.S. has seen a surge in the use of synthetic drugs made of legal chemicals that mimic the dangerous effects of cocaine, amphetamines and other illegal stimulants.

The drugs are often sold at small, independent stores in misleading packaging that suggests common household items like bath salts, incense and plant food. But the substances inside are powerful, mind-altering drugs that have been linked to bizarre and violent behavior across the country. Law enforcement officials refer to the drugs collectively as "bath salts," though they have nothing in common with the fragrant toiletries used to moisturize skin.

President Barack Obama signed a bill into law earlier this month that bans the sale, production and possession of more than two dozen of the most common bath salt drugs. But health professionals say lawmakers cannot keep pace with bath salt producers, who constantly adjust their chemical formulations to come up with new synthetic drugs that aren't covered by new laws. Experts who have studied the problem estimate there are more than 100 different bath salt chemicals in circulation.

"The moment you start to regulate one of them, they'll come out with a variant that sometimes is even more potent," said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

There are no back alleys or crack houses in America's latest drug epidemic. The problem involves potent substances that amateur chemists make, package and sell in stores under brands like "Ivory Wave," ''Vanilla Sky" and "Bliss" for as little as $15. Emergencies related to the drugs have surged: The American Association of Poison Control Centers received more than 6,100 calls about bath salt drugs in 2011 ? up from just 304 the year before ? and more than 1,700 calls in the first half of 2012.

The problem for lawmakers is that it's difficult to crack down on the drugs. U.S. laws prohibit the sale or possession of all substances that mimic illegal drugs, but only if federal prosecutors can show that they are intended for human use. People who make bath salts and similar drugs work around this by printing "not for human consumption" on virtually every packet.

Barbara Carreno, a spokeswoman for the Drug Enforcement Agency, said the intended use for bath salts is clear.

"Everyone knows these are drugs to get high, including the sellers," she said.

Many states have banned some of the most common bath salts, which are typically sold by small businesses like convenience stores, tobacco shops and adult book stores. For instance, West Virginia legislators banned the bath salt drug MDPV last year, making it a misdemeanor to sell, buy or possess the synthetic drug. Conviction means up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Stephanie Mitchell, assistant manager of The Den, a tobacco and paraphernalia shop in Morgantown, W.Va., said the store hasn't sold bath salts in the six months that she's worked there. But strung-out users still come in and ask for them.

"They're pretty ... cracked out, I guess would be a good word," said Mitchell, 21, a student at West Virginia University. "They're just kind of not all there. They're kind of sketchy people."

Mitchell says she wouldn't sell bath salts even if she had them, "because it's horrible, and I could get in trouble for it."

Despite the bans, bath salts producers are constantly tweaking their recipes to come up with new drugs that aren't covered by local laws. In fact, Mark Ryan, director of the Louisiana Poison Center, says there are so many different drugs out there that it's almost impossible to know what people have ingested, or how long the effects will last.

"Cocaine is cocaine and meth is meth. We know what these things do," he said. "But with these new drugs, every time the chemist alters the chemical structure, all bets are off."

    THE SPREAD

The most common bath salt drugs, like MDPV and mephedrone, were first developed in pharmaceutical research laboratories, though they were never approved for medical use. During the last decade they became popular as party drugs at European raves and dance clubs. As law enforcement began cracking down on the problem there, the drugs spread across the Atlantic Ocean.

Poison control centers in the U.S. began tracking use of the drugs in 2010. The majority of the early reports of drug use were clustered in Southern states like Louisiana, Tennessee and Kentucky. But the problem soon spread across the country.

The financial lure for small-time drugmakers is enticing. The drugs can be cheaply imported from China or India, and then easily packaged under local brands. For example, bath salts sold in Louisiana carry regional names like Hurricane Charlie or Bayou.

The widespread availability of the drugs in stores is equally alluring for drug users: they can get a cheap high similar to that of illegal drugs by walking to a corner store.

The most dangerous synthetic drugs are stimulants that affect levels of both dopamine and serotonin, brain chemicals that affect mood and perception. Users, who typically smoke or snort the powder-based drugs, may experience a surge in energy, fever and delusions of invincibility.

Use of these drugs has spread across the country with reports stretching from Maine to California. There are no official federal estimates on deaths connected with the drugs, many of which do not show up on typical drug tests. But police reports have implicated the drugs in several cases.

Packets of "Lady Bubbles" bath salts, for instance, were found on Sgt. David Franklyn Stewart last April after the solider shot and killed his wife and himself during a car chase with law enforcement near Olympia, Wash.

The chase began when Stewart sped past a police patrol car at 6 a.m. The police trooper pursued for 10 miles and reported seeing the driver raise a hand to his head, then heard a shot and saw the driver slump over. The next day police found the couple's 5-year-old son dead in their home; he had been suffocated with a plastic bag at least 24 hours earlier.

Another death involving bath salts played out in Covington, La. Police reported that Dickie Sanders, 21, shot himself in the head Nov. 11, 2010 while his parents were asleep.

His father, Dr. Richard Sanders, said his son had snorted "Cloud 9" bath salts and endured three days of intermittent delirium, at one point attempting to cut his own throat. As he continued to have visions, his physician father tried to calm him. But the elder Sanders said that as he slept, his son went into another room and shot himself.

    WHAT'S AHEAD

Hospital emergency rooms, doctors and law enforcement agencies across the country have struggled to control bath salt drug users who often are feverish and paranoid that they are being attacked. Doctors say users often turn up naked because bath salts raise their body temperature so much that they strip off their clothing.

Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Tennessee has treated 160 people suspected of taking bath salts since 2010. Dr. Sullivan Smith, who works there, said people on the drugs become combative, and it can take four or five health professionals to subdue them. In some cases, he said, doctors have to use prescription sedatives that are typically reserved for surgery.

Smith recalls one man who had been running for more than 24 hours because he believed the devil was chasing him with an ax. By the time police brought him to the hospital, he was dehydrated and covered in blood from running through thorny underbrush.

"We're seeing extreme agitation, hallucinations that are very vivid, paranoia and some really violent behavior, so it's a real crisis for us," Smith said. "We sedate the living daylights out of them. And we're talking doses on the order of 10 or 20 times what you would give for a painful procedure."

To control the spread of the problem, the Drug Enforcement Agency issued a temporary ban in October on three of the most common drugs ? mephedrone, methylone and MDPV. That ban became permanent under the bill signed by Obama on July 10.

Under the law, anyone convicted of selling, making or possessing 28 synthetic drugs, including bath salts, will face penalties similar to those for dealing traditional drugs like cocaine and heroin.

Those on the front lines say the legislation is a good start. But they don't expect new laws to dramatically curb use of bath salts in the near term.

"The problem is these drugs are changing and I'm sure they're going to find some that are a little bit different chemically so they don't fall under the law," said Dr. Smith, the Tennessee doctor. "Is it adequate to name five or 10 or even 20? The answer is no, they're changing too fast."

Senate OKs Dem tax-cut bill in showdown with GOP

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats pushed a yearlong extension of tax cuts for all but the highest-earning Americans through the Senate on Wednesday, giving Democrats a significant political victory on a measure that is fated to go no further in Congress.

Senators approved the Democratic bill by a near party-line 51-48 vote, with Vice President Joe Biden presiding over the chamber in case his vote was needed to break a tie. Minutes earlier, lawmakers voted 54-45 to kill a rival Republican package that would have included the best-off in the tax reductions.

The $250 billion Democratic measure would extend tax cuts in 2013 for millions of Americans that otherwise would expire in January. But it would deny those reductions to individuals making over $200,000 yearly and couples earning at least $250,000.

With control of the White House and Congress at stake in elections less than four months off, passage of the Democratic bill aligned the Senate with the tax-cutting vision of President Barack Obama. Obama has made tax fairness ? which includes tax increases on the rich ? an overarching theme of his re-election campaign, and rejection of the measure would have been an embarrassment for the president and Senate Democrats.

The vote also served as a counterpoint to the GOP-run House, which next week will approve tax cuts nearly identical to the $405 billion Republican plan the Senate rejected Wednesday.

"With the Senate's vote, the House Republicans are now the only people left in Washington holding hostage the middle-class tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans and nearly every small business owner," Obama said in a written statement after the vote.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, restated his plan for next week's House, citing the Democratic measure's tax boosts on higher earners. Republicans say those increases sap money from business owners who would otherwise create jobs, which Democrats say is overblown.

"The House will vote next week to stop that tax hike, and until the Senate does the same, the threat to our economy remains," Boehner said in a written statement.

Wednesday's Senate vote also highlighted how both parties see the tax issue as a winning one: Democrats because they think it makes the GOP look like defenders of the rich, Republicans because they think it shows Democrats don't care about businesses.

It took just minutes for Democratic Senate campaign officials to send emails saying that Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., was "holding tax relief for the middle-class hostage by demanding more millionaire tax breaks." GOP Senate campaign operatives sent out similar emails, with one saying Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., had voted to "raise taxes on Montana farmers, ranchers & small business owners."

Tester and Heller are in tight re-election contests this November.

Two senators who will retire next year ? Jim Webb, D-Va., and Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent who usually votes with Democrats ? were that party's only defectors on final passage.

Opposing the GOP measure were Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., who faces a tough re-election fight in November, and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., who could have a tight re-election in 2014, voted for both the Republican and Democratic plans.

"The question is, who are you fighting for," Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said before the vote. "Are you fighting for the people who make a billion dollars a year? That's who the Republicans are fighting for, and they get so emotional about it. Or are you fighting for the middle class, the heart and soul of America."

Republicans said the measure was all about Democratic posturing for the upcoming elections and would hurt the economy because boosting taxes on the wealthy will hinder them from hiring workers for their companies.

"Thank goodness it's not going anywhere because it would be bad for the economy, the single worst thing we could do to the country," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said.

Republicans were hoping that several Democrats seeking re-election would hurt their candidacies by having backed the Democratic package. The bill would dramatically boost the estate tax, which would be widely unpopular in farming, ranching and high cost-of-living states, and increase levies on dividends and capital gains, which are relied on by many elderly people.

"That's what today's votes are all about," McConnell said in a thinly veiled warning to Democrats. "Showing the people who sent us here where we stand."

Illustrating that, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who is in a tight re-election race, announced she had introduced a bill preventing the estate tax from rising next year. She issued a news release to that effect just minutes after voting for the Democratic bill, which would let estate taxes go much higher in 2013.

Under the Democratic measure, individuals earning over $200,000 and couples making at least $250,000 would see their top rates rise from 33 percent and 35 percent today to 36 percent and 39.6 percent in January.

Democrats argue that the well-off should contribute to efforts to contain federal deficits, while Republicans say many of those affected own businesses and would have a harder time hiring workers. The increase would affect 2.5 million households, or 2 percent of all 140.5 million tax returns, according to 2009 Internal Revenue Service statistics.

The Democratic bill would also boost the top tax rate paid by people who inherit estates to 55 percent, exempting the first $1 million in an estate's value. The GOP measure would maintain today's 35 percent top rate and would not tax the first $5.12 million of an estate's value.

In fresh figures released this week by Republicans, Congress' nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation estimated that the Democratic provision would affect 55,200 estates next year, compared with 3,600 who would face estate taxes under the GOP plan.

Democrats would impose top tax rates next year of 20 percent on dividends and capital gains, two sources of income enjoyed disproportionately by the wealthy. The GOP top rate would be 15 percent.

The GOP bill ignores some tax credits for low- and middle-income families that Democrats want to extend for college costs; for some low-income couples and large working families; and for families with children.

All were part of Obama's economic 2009 stimulus bill. Democrats say those tax breaks were meant to be permanent but Republicans say they were only a short-term response to the recession.

A Minute With: Matthew McConaughey and his new 'Killer' role

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Matthew McConaughey has spent most of the last decade starring in romantic comedy movies like "The Ghost of Girlfriends Past," but in recent years his roles have been edgier, which is the case with new film, "Killer Joe."

Based on Tracy Letts' stage play of the same name, "Killer Joe" has McConaughey in the title role of a cop who moonlights as contract killer in the crime thriller directed by "The Exorcist" maker William Friedkin.

A drug dealer named Chris (Emile Hirsch) hires Killer Joe to murder his mother. When Chris can't pay the hitman an upfront fee, Killer Joe decides to take Chris' sister Dottie (Juno Temple) as collateral.

McConaughey, 42, recently played a defense attorney in "The Lincoln Lawyer" and a district attorney trying to put away a murderer in "Bernie." Last month, he bared almost all as the slick owner of an all-male strip club in "Magic Mike." The star sat down with Reuters to talk about "Killer Joe," his career choices and being a newlywed.

Q: What drew you to a low-budget, independent film that was dark and twisted, yet also comedic?

A: "It was real good character work for me. A real challenge and exercise in introversion. Because this character is very, very introverted. In 'Magic Mike,' (his character) Dallas (his character) is all extroversion, all showman. Killer Joe lives in the shadows, picking out times when he shows you some light."

Q: He is a ruthless killer, but has a soft spot for Dottie. He makes the audience gasp in horror and laugh nervously.

A: "He's a guy who needs family at the bottom of it all. That's what he's looking for. It's wonderfully twisted, cheerfully amoral, provocative and it's upsetting your stomach, but you're laughing at the same time. And you're questioning yourself: 'Wait a minute, which emotion should I be feeling? Is it okay to laugh?'"

Q: Did you choose to play him sinister or with humor?

A: "I never chose to play sinister, just play him clear. Half the time he whispers. He speaks his words very clearly. He's not in a rush. Every move is very deliberate. If a character is doing that, those characters can become a little scary where you're like, 'Man, if this guy got off balance, this could be trouble.'"

Q: You already have one hit playing, "Magic Mike," which has $102 million at box offices. Were you surprised at its success?

A: "It's done better than any of us thought it would do. But just talking about the basic DNA (of the film): male strippers. You want to see some male skin? That could hit a nerve. That could be something that a lot of people want to go see. And fortunately it has been. At its very basic, just look at the poster, and you go: male strip club, no one's ever made that before. So we knew that we had something that was original."

Q: You spent the better part of a decade doing romantic comedies with Kate Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lopez. Has it been a conscious decision to take a break from that genre?

A: "It's been conscious. I've been seeing some romantic comedies and some action adventure film stories that I just felt like I'd either 1) done a version of them before or 2) felt like I could do them tomorrow. And you know what? Nothing wrong doing something you feel like you can do tomorrow. But let me do something I'm not comfortable with, that quick. Let me do something I'm really excited about getting on the other side of the mystery with, but I don't know the answer (to)."

Q: So you like not knowing the answers to some of these characters...

A: "And I know I'm going to have to go to work and I'm going to have days where I'm going, 'I don't know who this guy is! What am I going to do?' And I'll figure it out. That's been a really fun process for me with all these (recent) characters. They are all very singular-willed characters, ones that are not pandering to anyone else is society. They make up their own rules ... and that's been really fun to hang my hat on."

Q: You recently married your longtime girlfriend, Camila Alvez, who is the mother of your son Levi, 4 and daughter Vida, 2. Do you feel different now that you've gone through a formal wedding ceremony?

A: "The ritual of what we did and what we're saying together with God in our lives and with our children means more. It feels like one whole thing."

Fly Or Die: Retina MacBook Pro

Screen shot 2012-07-02 at 10.39.08 AMThe new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Sure, it stands to fudge up the Internet, but boy is it pretty! The display boasts 5.1 million pixels, with a bump from 1440x900 (on the 15-incher) to a full 2880x1800 resolution. It brings Apple's laptops into the display big leagues with the iPhone and iPad, and gets a bit thinner to boot. Plus, you'll get an HDMI port instead of that optical drive. But is the lofty price tag enough to replace your current MBP? The question can be answered in two parts: first, do you have the cash, and second, how much do you love the Internet?

Spain erupts in joy after historic Euro 2012 win

    By ALAN CLENDENNING, CIARAN GILES

    updated 7:11 p.m. ET July 1, 2012

MADRID - Spaniards blasted off fireworks and jumped for joy after their soccer team won the European Championship on Sunday night, giving the country a burst of national pride and temporary relief from the crushing economic woes that have engulfed the nation.

Tens of thousands gathered in central Madrid to watch their team beat Italy 4-0 and shout out "Gol!" more times than they thought possible. Even better for Spain, the country's team became the first ever to win a Euro, then a World Cup and then another Euro.

Spain needed "this win to counteract the suffering caused by the crisis, which seems endless," a smiling Antonio Ferrillo said in downtown Madrid.

The country has the highest unemployment rate in the 17-nation eurozone, is immersed in a deepening recession and recently asked for a bailout to prop up banks that could go broke after a decade-long property boom crashed.

After the triumph, cars drove by with passengers waving the country's red and yellow flag and yelling "Espana!, Espana!" and "I am Spanish! I am Spanish!"

But the victory gave Spaniards undisputed proof their team is the best in the world, setting off wild celebrations that went past midnight in all corners of the country.

"This is the best thing in the world that could happen," Vanesa Galilea, a 32-year-old civil servant, said as she danced with friends and thousands more in Madrid's central Cibeles square. "This generation of soccer players is incredible."

She added: "Tonight everyone can forget about the crisis, but it won't disappear, unfortunately. Economically this won't change anything but at least we will be happy for a while. Half of Spain won't show up at work tomorrow, that's for sure!"

Daniel Garcia, a 23-year-old university student, said the result made him proud to be Spanish and hopeful that he may find a job amid dire prospects, with one out of every four Spaniards jobless and the unemployment rate hitting 52 percent for people like him who are under age 25.

"It will be difficult, but maybe this will help raise our spirits and get us out of this crisis," Garcia said.

Crowds hugged each other, cried and danced with glee after they watched Spain win on a huge screen erected outside the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the home of the Real Madrid club team.

"This is very important for Spain and if it brings the risk premium down tomorrow, all the better,'" Adrian Barajas, a 35-year-old bank clerk, referring to the skyrocketing risk premium level for Spanish government debt that has raised fears the nation may soon need a full-blown public finances bailout like those accepted by Greece, Portugal and Ireland.

Sunday's stunning victory "will raise morale for sure, but for three days, no more," Barajas said. "Spaniards realize this is just soccer."

Crown Prince Felipe called the win a "joy for Spain" and said he hoped Spaniards would "enjoy what they deserve."

"Italy is a very competitive team that never gives up. But when we got the third goal and the Italians had their setback with their injured player, comeback was impossible for them," he told Spain's Telecinco television network after watching the game from the VIP section in Kiev, Ukraine.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who sat near Prince Felipe during the game, said he hoped the victory would give "comfort" to Spaniards who have been enduring waves of painful austerity measures enacted by his administration. The government has raised taxes, made it cheaper for companies to fire workers and reduced funding for the country's cherished national health care and public education systems.

"We're human beings, we have our problems," Rajoy told Telecinco. "Feelings and joy, and everything that comes out of the soul, is beautiful. We have to thank the team and their coaches, they did very well."
