A new spy satellite launched into orbit on a secret mission for the U.S. military Friday (June 29), roaring spaceward atop the world's most powerful rocket in use today.

The NROL-15 reconnaissance satellite blasted off from a launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 9:15 a.m. EDT (1315 GMT) to begin its classified mission for the National Reconnaissance Office. It rode a towering?Delta 4-Heavy booster?equipped with new RS-68A first stage engines ? the most powerful liquid hydrogen rocket engines ever built, according to their manufactures.

Built by Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne, the new RS-68A engines are each capable of generating 702,000 pounds of thrust and are more efficient than a previous design, the rocket engine builders said, adding that the engine generates 36,000 more pounds of thrust than its predecessor. Three of the new rocket engines made their space launch debut in Friday's Delta 4-Heavy flight by rocket provider United Launch Alliance.

The Delta 4-Heavy rocket is currently the largest and most powerful rocket in service. The booster features three core rocket boosters and is topped with a second stage to place payloads into orbit. It is 235 feet tall (72 meters) and can carry payloads of up to 24 tons into low-Earth orbit and 11 tons to geosynchronous orbits.

Friday's launch came after several delays for the Delta 4-Heavy. The rocket was initially slated to blast off on Thursday, but ULA and Air Force officials pushed the launch back 24 hours due to?weather delays from Tropical Storm Debby.

During today's liftoff, a fuel valve problem prompted launch controllers to repeatedly hold the countdown. But the glitch was ultimately resolved, clearing the booster for flight.

The successful launch marked the second space mission in nine days by ULA to orbit a classified payload for the U.S. military. The company, a joint launch services endeavor by Boeing and Lockheed Martin,?launched the NROL-38 spy satellite?into orbit just last week on June 20.

"Phew! 2 launches in 9 days. Who says things slow down in summer!" ULA officials wrote in a Twitter post just after liftoff.

ULA officials broadcast the secret NROL-15 satellite's launch live, but cut the feed off four minutes after liftoff at the request of NRO officials, a typical action for U.S. reconnaissance satellite launches. ?

The next ULA launch will be an Atlas 5 rocket slated to loft another NRO spy satellite into orbit in August. That mission is expected to launch from the Vandenberg Air Force Station in California.

The decision to move came somewhat out of left field for us. We knew it was something we should do before the baby arrived. And since we?re not even pregnant yet, we would have likely been fine in our current apartment for quite some time. But, alas, we?re moving in two days.

As I pack what?s collectively become Sara?s and mine over the past two years, as I take down the pictures from the walls, and as I walk around an apartment that?s slowly looking less and less like home, it?s strange to think that our child will never know the home in which she or he first became a twinkle star.

This is the first place Sara and I lived together. Our first home together. It?s where we became moms to the four-legged kind when we rescued our sweet Darla. It?s where we celebrated our first Christmas. Had our first marital fight. Ordered Thai food every Monday night. It?s where we first learned who sucks at washing dishes and who has a terrible habit of not brushing her teeth before bed. This is where we lived when her parents agreed to meet me after two years and ten days of loving their daughter. This is where we lived when I asked Sara to marry me. This is where we lived when we decided to have a baby.

As I look at the becoming-bare walls, I try to remember them as they were ? remembering the first days after we moved in. Sitting in the window seat, looking out on the street, waiting for Sara to come home from work. I remember when the city had to replace a pipeline; they needed to undo the cobblestone street stone by stone. The pile of cobblestones sat on the sidewalk for days while they repaired the pipeline. One evening, while walking our dog, I told Sara how much I?d love one of those cobblestones as a keepsake of our first home together. She laughed at me.

?Babe, it?s just a brick,? she said.

I always have been the sentimental type.

I box up our dishes. Pots. Pans. Boxes of tampons (Yes, we have boxes. Two women in the house, what can I say). I toss clothes I haven?t worn since I met Sara. And I hire a moving company. I?ve moved an outrageous amount of times in my 34 years of life, some by choice, others having been decided for me through breakups ? yes, I?ve been dumped; can you imagine? ? but all moves have always accompanied a constant struggle of becoming who I am.

Except for this move. There is no struggle.

But there is an entirely new feeling that I can?t quite pinpoint. It?s not exactly sadness. Perhaps reflection of the future. Can you do that? Can you reflect from the future? I don?t know, but that?s what it feels like. I think of so many of ?our first? memories in this home while I pack, and it?s a strange ? I do not know what other word to use to describe it ? feeling. To know that these are times and here are memories that our child will never know. Sure, we can share the stories. But this is life without our baby. So much is about to change. And while I so much so look forward to the future with the family we are about to create, I don?t ever want to forget these moments.

I am glad we?re moving before the baby, before the pregnancy even. I?m glad I have all of myself to focus on this time, and don?t have the added stress and emotions of doing any of this while I?m pregnant. I?m glad I can recall everything this home has meant to us over the years, and put each memory in its proper box.

But mostly, I?m glad Sara surprised me one day with a stolen cobblestone from the first street on which we ever called home.

Mark Regnerus claims to have produced the first rigorous scientific evidence showing that same sex families harm children. As a family sociologist at the University of Texas, I am disturbed by his irresponsible and reckless representation of social science research, and furious that he is besmirching my university to lend credibility to his ?findings.?

The recent study by my colleague Mark Regnerus on gay parenting purports to show that young adults with a parent who ever had a same-sex relationship turn out worse than young adults with continuously married heterosexual parents (who are, in addition, biologically related to their children). He calls this latter group the ?gold standard for parenting.?

But in making this claim, he has violated the ?gold standard for research.? Regnerus? study is bad science. Among other errors, he made egregious yet strategic decisions in selecting particular groups for comparison.

His definition of children raised by lesbian mothers and gay fathers is incredibly broad ? anyone whose biological or adopted mother or father had a same-sex relationship that the respondent knew about by age 18. Most of these respondents did not even live with their parent?s same-sex partner; in fact, many did not even live with their gay or lesbian parent at all! Of the 175 adult children Regnerus claims were raised by ?lesbian mothers,? only 40 actually lived with their mother and her same-sex partner for at least three years.

On the other hand, to be included in the ?heterosexual married family? category, respondents had to have parents who were continuously married from the time of their birth to the time of the survey! Anyone whose parents had divorced between the time they left home and when they took the survey (respondents were aged 18 to 39 at the time of the survey) was not included in this so-called ?gold standard.?

By casting his net so widely for children of supposedly gay and lesbian parents, and so narrowly for the children of heterosexual couples, Regnerus practically guaranteed that his study would find that those with so-called gay and lesbian parents would fare worse than those with so-called heterosexual parents. His approach selected for people who had experienced far more stress and far less stability than average for their generation, much of which arguably had little to do with their parent?s sexual orientation. They experienced more parental divorce, remarriage, and adoption (perhaps preceded by foster care). They were also more likely to be nonwhite and less economically privileged.

Regnerus could have compared young adults who lived continuously in exclusively heterosexual households and those who lived continuously with a parent in a same-sex relationship. But he did not, both because his sample of youth from ?gay families? was too small to parse in this fashion and because his sample of youth from heterosexual households of all types would not likely produce many differences from the ?gay parent? group.

While Regnerus has the right to investigate any question, he also has the responsibility to report only robust findings. We are dismayed by the poor quality of this analysis. Regnerus is not an expert in family sociology, nor does he represent the views of other faculty at the University of Texas. I have been conducting research on family relationships, including gay and lesbian relationships, for many years. Yet the first I learned of this study was when it hit the press. Had Regnerus walked down the hall and knocked on my door, I would have been happy to explain that stress and instability harm children in any family context.
