DURHAM, N.H. Space scientists, including researchers from the University of New Hampshire (UNH), today described the first detailed analyses of samples of captured interstellar neutral atoms raw material for the formation of new stars, planets, and human beings.

Investigators on NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission, including UNH space physicist Eberhard Mbius, David McComas of the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), and Priscilla Frisch of the University of Chicago, as well as astronomer Seth Redfield of Wesleyan University, presented the mission findings at a press conference from NASA headquarters in Washington,D.C. beginning at 1 p.m. and broadcast via NASA TV at www.nasa.gov/sunearth.

The NASA press conference occurred in conjunction with the publication of six papers in the February issue of The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ) Supplement Series by IBEX team members, including Mbius and other UNH authors.

In addition to sampling the raw "star stuff" out of which stars, planets, and humans are formed, the findings are important because the interstellar gas surrounding us can affect the strength of the Sun's heliosphere the protective bubble that shields our solar system from dangerous cosmic radiation.

IBEX discovered that the interstellar wind is approximately 7,000 miles per hour slower than previously thought. This indicates that our solar system is still in what's referred to as the "local interstellar cloud." However, astronomers note, we will transition into a different region at any time within a few thousand years (very short on astronomical time scales) where conditions will change and affect the heliosphere's protective capability for better or worse.

As our solar system travels around the Milky Way through the vast sweep of cosmic time, the ever-changing nature of the heliosphere has likely had implications on the evolution of life on Earth as varying levels of radiation spurred genetic mutations and, perhaps, wholesale extinctions.

A deeper understanding of our heliosphere will also aid scientists in exploring analogous structures, "astrospheres," surrounding other stars throughout the galaxy, many of which also harbor planets according to recent findings.

IBEX's second major finding announced in the press conference and papers, that is, the first direct measurements of oxygen and neon from outside the solar system, shows that the composition of the local interstellar cloud appears to differ noticeably from the makeup of the Sun and even the average Milky Way galaxy.

There is less oxygen relative to neon in the local cloud than in the Sun and the Milky Way as a whole, which presents a puzzle to astronomers. Perhaps, it means that a substantial portion of an essential ingredient of life (oxygen) is locked up in dust, or it could tell us how different the conditions in our immediate neighborhood are than at the birthplace of the Sun.

Notes Mbius, an astrophysicist at the UNH Institute for the Study or Earth, Oceans, and Space and department of physics, "Together with the modeling of how stars sprinkle material into the interstellar medium, these measurements can really help us figure out the temporal evolution of the cosmic matter."

IBEX, one of NASA's Small Explorer missions, was launched October 19, 2008. McComas of SwRI is the mission's principal investigator. The space probe uses a pair of ultra-high sensitivity cameras one led by the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the other by the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center (LMATC) that contain important components designed and built at UNH. Mbius, currently on sabbatical as visiting professor at LANL, is the principal UNH scientist for IBEX, and the mission's Science Operations Center, directed by associate professor of physics Nathan Schwadron, is headquartered at UNH.

In addition to Mbius and Schwadron, the other UNH authors on the ApJ papers include, David Heirtzler, Harald Kucharek, Martin Lee, visiting professor Peter Bochsler, graduate students Trevor Leonard and Xian Wu, as well as former physics undergraduates George Clark, Morgan O'Neill, and Lee Petersen. The scientific effort that led to the six papers was carried out by a large collaboration that includes scientists from six US research institutions as well as the University of Bern, Switzerland, and the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

ApJ publishes significant papers that contain extensive data and/or calculations and are of particular interest to the scientific community. The Supplement contains many of the most frequently cited papers in the astronomical literature.

Among the six U.S. institutions on the IBEX mission are UNH, the LMATC, SwRI, the University of Texas, San Antonio, MIT, and the University of Chicago.

Suicide bomber kills 32 at Iraq funeral procession (AP)

BAGHDAD ? A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-packed car near a funeral procession in southeastern Baghdad on Friday, killing at least 32 people ? half of them policemen who were guarding the march ? in the latest brazen attack since the U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq.

Police said the bomb exploded at 11:00 a.m. in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Zafaraniyah, where mourners had gathered for the funeral of a person killed the day before. They said 65 people were wounded in the attack, including 16 police.

Hospital officials confirmed the death toll.

Across Iraq, at least 200 people have been killed in a wave of attacks by suspected insurgents since the beginning of the year. Erupting just weeks after completion of the U.S. military withdrawal Dec. 18, it raised concerns that the surge in violence and an escalating political crisis might deteriorate into a civil war.

Most of the dead have been Shiite pilgrims and members of the Iraqi security forces.

A sectarian-based political crisis has added to the concerns of descent into violence.

Salam Hussein, a 42-year-old grocery store owner in Zafaraniyah, said he was watching Friday's funeral procession, which was heavily guarded by police, when the blast blew out his store windows and injured one of his workers.

"It was a huge explosion," Hussein said. As he took his worker to the hospital, Hussein said he saw cars engulfed in flames, "human flesh scattered around and several mutilated bodies in a pool of blood" around the place where the attacker's car exploded.

Officials at the Zafaraniyah General Hospital, where most of the dead and injured were taken, said the powerful blast shattered windows and damaged walls in the hospital, injuring a nurse and four patients who were being treated at the time of the attack.

Zafaraniyah resident Talib Bashir, 50, said he was part of the procession of about 500 men but left the group to take his child home, and then he heard the blast.

"I saw smoke coming from a parked car that exploded," Bashir said, and police and civilians cars, an ambulance and several stores were engulfed in flames hours after the blast. "The fire lasted for a long time," Bashir said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Friday's attack.

Minutes after the explosion, gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint in Zafaraniyah, killing two police officers, according to police officials. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

Since the United States completed its pullout, militant groups ? mainly al-Qaida in Iraq ? have stepped up attacks targeting the country's majority Shiites to undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government and its efforts to protect people without American backup.

On Thursday, 17 people were killed in bombings around the country, including seven people in attacks on Baghdad's s two mostly Sunni districts, suggesting that Shiite militants could be retaliating for attacks against them.

Friday's blast was the second deadliest single attack in Iraq this month.

At least 53 people were killed Jan. 14, when a bomb tore through a procession of Shiite pilgrims heading toward a largely Sunni town in southern Iraq.

Progress M-14M, Russian Cargo Ship, Launched Toward Space Station

MOSCOW -- Russia's space agency says an unmanned cargo ship carrying 2.6 tons of supplies and equipment has lifted off for the International Space Station.

Roskosmos says the Progress M-14M blasted off early Thursday from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan atop a Soyuz-U booster rocket.

The ship is scheduled to dock at the space station early Saturday with a cargo of oxygen, food, scientific equipment and gifts for the crew.

The space station's six members include three Russians, two Americans and a Dutchman.

The decade-old station is orbiting about 225 miles (360 kilometers) above Earth and consists of 13 modules.

Health Tip: Limit Drug-Food Interactions (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- Sometimes the foods you eat and the meds you take don't mix.

The American Academy of Family Physicians says foods can negatively affect the way prescription or over-the-counter drugs work. The academy offers this advice on avoiding these so-called drug-food interactions:

  • Always read the label on your medications; ask questions of the pharmacist if you don't understand something or aren't sure.
  • Follow all label instructions and warnings on both prescription and over-the-counter medications.
  • Take any medication with a full glass of water, unless your doctor has advised differently.
  • Don't stir a medication with food or break open a capsule, unless your doctor has told you to do so.
  • Don't take any medication at the same time as you take vitamins.
  • Don't mix a medication in a hot drink, and never take a medication with alcohol.

Tornadoes touch down in Indiana, Kentucky and Mississippi (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Tornadoes struck parts of Mississippi, Indiana and Kentucky on Tuesday, including one that hit a home in Mississippi and injured at least one person, meteorologists said.

The Indiana and Kentucky twisters knocked out power lines, downed trees and caused property damage, while a Sheriff's Department dispatcher said the Mississippi tornado struck a home in south Marion County, and a person who was inside suffered a possible broken arm.

Tornadoes are unusual for this part of the year in Indiana and neighboring Kentucky, although twisters occasionally hit Mississippi during the current season, said Dan Pydynowski, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.com, whose company provides forecasting services.

A cold front combined with a warm and humid air mass contributed to the latest twisters, but those conditions were dissipating, he said.

"The threat's pretty much come to an end everywhere, so I don't think there's any more tornadic activity to worry about anywhere at this point," Pydynowski said.

In the area of Louisville, Kentucky, a twister knocked down trees and power lines along roadways, the National Weather Service said. To the north in Clark County, Indiana, a twister touched down in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart, the Weather Service added. When the twister moved, a vehicle was turned over on nearby Interstate 65, the agency said.

At Madison Municipal Airport in southeast Indiana, a twister also damaged a Beechcraft King Air when it moved the small plane and broke its nose gear, the Weather Service said.

Khloe Kardashian undergoes fertility treatment

Khloe Kardashian Odom is already a doting aunt. And now she's ready to be a doting mom.

A source close to the Kardashian family confirms to E! News that the married reality star is currently seeing a fertility specialist in her new adopted hometown of Dallas.

According to the source, Khloe is "trying very hard" to get pregnant with the help of fertility treatments, though there's no word on what treatments, exactly, the 27-year-old has been undergoing and for how long, be it fertility drugs or hormones or various other procedures.

However, Lamar Odom's wife of two years is said to be "actively working" with a specialist.

For her part, Khloe has always been open about her desire to start a family.

Shortly after their one-year anniversary, back in the fall of 2010, Khloe and Lamar told E! News that they were already working on adding to their family.

"We're on it right now," Lamar said. "And I'm having fun trying."

And just last month, a Twitter follower implored the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star to "please have beautiful babies soon!!" To which Khloe replied, "I'm waiting on the big man upstairs to bless us with that blessing ;)"

In the meantime, Khloe's been getting plenty of mothering practice, both as loving aunt to her adorable nephew Mason and as a stepmom to Lamar's three children from a previous relationship.

Meanwhile, she's already gotten a head start on nesting, having more than made a home in Dallas. But that doesn't mean she doesn't appreciate a good homecoming when it happens.

"So emotional!" she tweeted Monday, after Odom received a standing ovation from Lakers fans upon returning to his old turf for a Mavericks game. " This makes my face hurt from smiling!!!!! Such a proud wifey!" Aww.
